On top of the bullshit about trade, lying about job gains, and the insensitive "Americans are dreamers too", he paraded a North Korean defector after a a campaign full of propaganda, lies and scapegoating. Unfortunately, just like with Cuba, many who escape these oppressive states, there is a tendency for those who do to go to the other extreme and take the "I had it bad so don't bitch yourself".
To those fortunate enough and brave enough to take the risk of arrest or death to escape those places, that escape is not an argument. WE are happy for you. We do want you here. But turning to the other extreme because you didn't like their totalitarian nanny state is not the answer. It simply is not true that liberals are seeking the same type of nanny state just because you escaped their family rule. And thats what BOTH Cuba and North Korea really are, politics and ideology used and manipulated to protect one family. Power is passed down to a family member in both cases.
In the west what liberals seek to protect, should not be a one party state, or one family. If one wants to claim there are some on the far left that want to end the private sector, I can tell you, that IS NOT the majority of liberals, not even close to a fraction. Liberals DO value the private sector as much as the GOP would love to claim. What we object to are any abuse of power, and monopoly of power, which is why our government was set up to have checks on all power, and that is supposed include a check on class. Money is one aspect of a society, but it is NOT more important than any other part of society.
The Kim family is not poor. They have global investments as well as the Castro family. They are really a political form of an economic monopoly selling an ideology to maintain their wealth. The same can be said for the Saudi Royal family but merely protected by selling theocratic ideology. They too, like the Kim family and Castro family, ARE NOT POOR.
When liberals talk about workers we are not talking about Stalin's communism or setting up a North Korea ourselves. When we talk about taxes we are not advocating robbing anyone. When we talk about needing affordable living we are not saying business should be banned. We are merely saying that America can do better when those with the most care to provide rather than to merely protect profits.
When we talk about treating migrants like our fellow humans, we are not saying we want violent people here. We are saying in the process of deciding who stays and who goes, we do such with compassion for those whom are not violent regardless of where they come from. When I saw that defector stand up and cheer for the President, it was understandable but also upsetting at the same time. It was upsetting because I see one man undermining the very ideas and checks on power the defector did not have prior to escaping.
There has to be a check on class too, it cannot be either or. It cannot be nanny state or "let the rich decide for everyone", just because you escaped an Orwellian state. America had little to no regulation prior to the Great Depression. Reagan started the age of deregulation and "don't tax the rich", and Bush Jr doubled down on that and we ended up in a triple whammy crash. The current occupier of the White House is pouring more gas on that fire, and using the same divisive tactics of scapegoating ANYONE who questions his office. If you value your freedom defector, we are glad you escaped. But if you think supporting a President, who is even scapegoating media and even his own intel, then why did you leave? Why escape such horrors only to support a politician using the same political tactics here?
We are seeing here, one man use his office to bring attention to his properties, inviting his family members to official meetings when they are NOT elected to public office. If you hate the kleptocracy the Kim family or the Castro family or the Saudi Royal family are in reality, why, why come here and then support a man that seems to be wanting to attempt his own consolidation of power here? He tried to intimidate Comey, he is now lying about a memo with the GOP putting out an incomplete out of context version. Why? Why? Because we now have one party, full of cowards more afraid of losing power, than putting our country above politics, above the selfishness and narcissism of one man.
I cannot imagine what one goes through being of dissent, in North Korea, or Cuba or Saudi Arabia, I won't even pretend to know. But I do know history, and I do know what history says about outcomes when the political rhetoric becomes toxic and divisive, and it never ends well, it usually ends up looking like the states sane people want to escape.
