When i was in NY last year, i was at OWS and there were police everywhere despite the protest being a sit down protest. The cops looked like they'd been dragged off the street and notably, fat.

Just saw this on the BBC News page - I have it set as my homepage so I can't really avoid it. I've been trying to think of a way to process it, but I can't find the words except to say that I can't imagine living in a society in which things like this can happen.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

It's the land of the free and the home of the brave.... especially if they are hosing down peaceful protesters with pepperspray, Stim.

That pepperspray is truly horrible stuff. If it comes to a straight choice it's better than having a bullet in your head, I grant you, but the effects are incredibly inhumane. I've known people - again, peaceful protestors - who've needed months of hospital treatment because of it.
I realise that society needs its defences against genuine criminals, particularly if those criminals are themselves armed, but until the famous phaser stun setting has been invented we will never have a truly 'harmless' form of crowd control. Besides, as events have shown, it's the public who need defending from the defenders.
On a related note, regarding criminals and law enforcers being armed, I recommend checking out any of the books and talks by former criminal and genuine East End gangster Dave Courtney. He's one of the new breed of 'celebrity' criminals who've realised they can make more money via the autobiography and lecture circuit than by heisting banks.
Anyway, he's said repeatedly how much he despises firearms, preferring instead the knuckleduster, a.k.a. brass knuckles. As he says, not only can you get locked up just for carrying a gun whereas a knuckleduster is just a tool, a lump of metal, if you take a firearm to do a job then at some point you must be expecting to use it. It only takes one bullet to turn an ordinary bank job into a life sentence for murder. With the knuckles, you can floor an assailant with one punch and the worst case result is a broken jaw. Broken bones can mend; bullets in heads won't.
