There's a special cleanser you can use for the walls which I'm told will cut the smell substantially. Regular cleaners won't do it. You might talk to a professional cleaner and see what they recommend. It's never been my impression that carpets are especially important, but I don't know. My place doesn't have carpet, and I've never noticed the smell. (Though I had a car I smoked in, and it reeked.)
Congratulations on your quit!
I've been quit for over 3 years. I think I had an easier quit than most (having had a lot of prior experience quitting), but if you need anything I can provide from my experience, feel free to ask.
I'll just offer one tip I found really useful. It's the acronym H.A.L.T., which stands for Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired. These are the times when we're likely to be most vulnerable to urges. If you have a difficult urge, and you are H, A, L, or T, attend to that first, and try to keep that in perspective.
Oh, and congratulations on your quit, too, Shell. I wish you the best.
Thank You for the Info.

Congratulations to all of you on your quit! You're so awesome! Yaaaaay!

Congratulation to all that have quit, I quit over a dozen years ago. I have friends who say they quit, yet after a few weeks they start smoking again. So now when they tell me they quit, I say no you have stopped. When a person becomes like Zappa and hates the smell they've quit. Zappa I hope you are successful in getting rid of the odor, I can not stand to smell cig smoke.
God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

My fiance's grandmother (and father/uncles) are dealing with this. It even yellows the walls and stuff. I'm sure you'll need to you something with more heft to it than an over-the-counter cleaner.
This isn't meant to be cheeky, I just don't know what links are appropriate, but here is a link to a google search! I'm seeing vinegar and activated charcoal consistently. Also Febreeze, but I don't think that will be strong enough for you. Good luck to you.

Deep-clean the carpet once a week.....alternate with a wet cleaner (one of those professional units you can rent at the grocery store) and a dry cleaner (just pour it on the carpet and vacuum it up with a regular vacuum).
But really, you may never get rid of the smell with just simply cleaning...I think the solution I had after a tenant left that smoked a lot was to redo the inside paint, but then again that rental turned to be so bad we had to write off one of those home wet cleaners as a loss....that takes a lot to kill one of those. Also almost lost the property due to one of the tenants being a meth dealer.
I knew someone who smoked a lot bought one of those ionic breezes, maybe that would help with the smell....you can also spray enough Lysol (or something like it...Febreeze is too weak to be effective against smoke) in the air to kill the sensors in your nose (they have ozone).....so you won't be able to smell much, but at least that will lower the intensity of the smell of stale smoke.
But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.

I smoke inside. I find the best thing to do is just leave windoes open. It wil eventually make the smell less. But i've always smoked with the windoes open. In the winter i wound't ofcourse, but I would if i left the house.
So my advise is just to leave your windoes open as much as you can.

I think you may just have to replace the carpets. There hasn't been a smoker in this flat since January 2004 when my Mum died yet I can still smell smoke coming from the carpets in certain rooms more than 8 and a half years later.
As for the walls, wash them down thoroughly with sugar soap. If you just paint over them you will end up with browny/yellowy ickiness seeping through when it gets warm.
Oh, and congratulations on quitting!

Oh, and congratulations on quitting! Ive seen that upstairs in the bathroom. I never smoked up there. The old guy who owned this place was a very heavy smoker. I clean the walls in there every week and it still keeps coming out. I didn't smoke that much in the house but I may be smelling the past guys stuff. We had to paint every wall and throw away every carpet when i moved in here. It smelled like a old ash tray when i got this farm. I think my barn smells better at times now.

Alcohol based detergent, let it dry off thoroughly, 2 coats of killz, primer and paint, voila. Seeping though....that would be a bigger issue than smoke stains. There shouldn't be enough moisture in your walls for -anything- to ooze. The carpet's fucked....lol, only thing worse than smoke is cat urine..lol
