Maybe, the way I understood "it takes religion"...is that nothing else but religion would make good people do evil things.

Which you accepted as being the case but not in isolation. Perhaps the phrase is a little ambiguous but unfortunately we don't have Professor Weinberg around for a clarification. I'm guessing that if he'd intended to say that, he'd have included words like "only" or "exclusively" or similar.
