3...really ? By that reasoning the Lord of the Rings should of been 10 movies.
Should've.

The extended version of Return of the King is over 4 hours long and I still would have gladly had it made longer. ![Tongue Tongue](https://atheistforums.org/images/smilies/tongue.gif)
Indeed. I watched the extended version of all 3 films. 1 of which with 2 different commentaries. I'll get around to the other 2 eventually (with commentaries). Fun stuff for Tolkein Fanbois.

I'm not a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings books. I couldn't even finish The Two Towers. I felt the whole thing got bogged down in superfluous background explanations and excessive useage of obscure character's names. That's just my opinon as I know lots of people love it. I did, however, absolutely love The Hobbit, probably because it was a more streamlined story. I am having a hard time figuring out where they'll get three movies worth of material, though.
Who is the character at the 1:14 mark? When I first saw it, I thought it might be Tom Bombadil, but I can't remember if he even shows up until The Fellowship of the Ring.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

So why not make a movie 10 hours long?

I also greatly prefer The Hobbit, have an earmarked copy lying around somewhere here

If only...
I imagine that would be difficult to pitch to the film companies. And how much popcorn would you need to buy for that?!

Interesting.
Lord of the Rings was split up into three movies, just like the books, but they still had to take entire chapters out and it took away some of the depth. There were details that I didn't like as they translated the books to movie and even added bits and pieces, but, damn, overall they were still awesome. I do kinda wonder, though, what changes will be made to The Hobbit to move it onto the big screen?

They should do a 1:1 adaption; i.e., if someone in the book travels for a month then that part in movie should also last for one month. You could spend 12 hours watching someone have an extended nap! Of course, you'd probably need a nap yourself during their nap. You could pause the movie, have your nap, and then resume watching their nap.

You could watch sitting on a beanbag full of popcorn. Though the more you eat the more uncomfortable you'd become...
