This is a stupid argument. It is like going to a si fi convention listing to a Star Trec fan argue with a Star Wars fan.

"I am not like the others", YES YOU ARE. You have as much evidence for your pet diety claim as any Muslim, Jew, Hindu, or Catholic. Superstition is superstition by any name.

Be the first to get your pet god theory pantented and you will be the first human in our species history to do such. Good luck with that, I am sure you will have as much succes as those prior.
So?

This advise was intended for a believer who is having trouble with one very specific form of Christianity. My advise is to simply switch to another. You have completely missed the point of the conversation. I do not have to prove God to this believer. All I must do is show that God exists beyond his understanding of worship. To which the foundation of general belief has been established in his current form of worship.

Yes! Thats right! Switch your delusion to one more pleasing to your sensibilities!
Fantastic advice Drich! I think you've made your astoundingly complex and eloquent point perfectly clear.
You can stop typing now.

And it would probably surprise you how non-serious something can be and still be a mortal sin.

For example, missing Mass on Sunday is a mortal sin.

And masturbating is a mortal sin.

So really, who hasn't done either?

I'll skip over the part where I say I've never missed a Sunday Mass in my life - I've just never been to one - and get right to the meat.

If even innocuous things such as self-pleasuring and not attending esoteric religious rituals is enough to damn a person to eternal post-mortem torture (or whatever definition of hell is being invoked here), then what is to stop me from rushing out raping and killing at random? After all, all these 'sins' are treated as equal so if I'm to be hanged for a sheep as a lamb, so where's the deterrent to do wrong?
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Hell isn't about preventing sin. It's there for the pleasure of the sadistic bastard who created it.

Christ died for our sins taking away the need for animal sacerfice.

animals sacerficed to God were usally sold/eaten. Not all sacerfices were Burnt offerings.

But if you eat them then how are you sacrificing? What if we arbitrarily labeled every animal we killed as a 'sacrifice'? What would the difference be?

Let's not forget that child sacrifice was acceptable in the earliest parts the OT.

I condensed your post down to just the following four major complaints. A reminder, that these are issues that YOU brought to the table.

(September 21, 2012 at 1:06 am)Blackrook Wrote: 1. So really, the chances of getting into heaven are pretty slim if you're a Catholic and darn near impossible if you're not.
2. It seems to me that many Catholic priests and bishops have serious mortal sins on their soul and really, their sins are far more serious than missing Mass and masturbating.
3. I'm actually not much of a sinner compared to Cardinal Law or Cardinal Mahoney, who covered up for pedophiles and did not expel them from the priesthood.
4. I am distressed and disturbed that the Catholic faith which meant so much to me has let me down in this deep and fundamental way.

Despite these major problems, you still followed that up with this statement:

Blackrook Wrote:Anyway, I'm sure all of you are going to pile up on me and tell me I should be an atheist now, but that's not going to happen.

To reword that final statement:
"This hot ember in my hat is burning me, but I was told it will keep me warm." "Oh and screw you guys for telling me to take off my hat."

If you don't want opinions on your stupidity, do not post your idiocy on the world wide web. What kind of person voices his grievances about something and than turns hostile when another person agrees with him?? ... A fool.

And of course finally, you made the joke of the day:
Blackrook Wrote:I can't believe in a universe that pops into existence out of nothing. That makes no sense to me.

No that doesn't make sense to you, but THIS does:

Once you kill/eat an animal it stops providing things like wool, milk, eggs, offspring, security, and so on. Animals were used for much more than food in that time. The only time an animal was killed and eaten was when it stoped being productive. Which was a problem when you considered sacerficed anaimals had to be the best of the best and in their prime.

Ok, first off, why were any burnt offerings needed?

Even if we overlook that absurdity, there's still quite a bit of conflict of interests here. Can't anyone see it?

Ok, let's look at it this way: I'm a priest. God wants a cheeseburger..... and I'll go ahead and eat it for him. God wants $100..... and I'll go ahead and pocket that for him. God wants to have sex with Lindsey Lohan..... and he'll be possessing my body to do it. God wants to kill that guy and take his house...... and I'll be sleeping there to watch it for him.

Basically, all a priest has to do is be a self serving dick, demand everything he wants from the people and justify it by saying he's doing it for gawd. I mean, really, what's the difference between that and a huckster like Oral Roberts?
