What does it mean to be spiritual?

RE: What does it mean to be spiritual?
Spirituality = bullshittery for bullshitters.
You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.

I realize this is a loaded question, and I haven't really thought it through, but I have a current operating definition.

To me, 'spirituality' means those ways of 'knowing', understanding, conceptualizing those aspects of life and existence for which we need practical, rational answers, but don't yet really have practical rational answers. It's a way of putting the unknown (or poorly understood) aspect of who we are as beings with purpose and desires in ways that make it, at least, somewhat useful. For example, we don't currently have a scientific answer for questions such as, "what is my purpose, and given that, should I take that better paying but less desirable job offer?" Our reach far exceeds our grasp in terms of nailing away these questions with our science and reason. So, spirituality fills the void, and I think, in some sense, let's our intuition and subconscious percolate up things that may be accurate, but that the reasoning, linguistic brain has not yet grasped. So to me, then, spirituality is a bridge between those parts of being ourselves which are rationally, practically knowable ("How many calories of food should I eat each day?"), and those which are on the edge, or out of reach, but which our less rational selves can steer us, if not to correct answers, to at least cohesive ways of living in response to these questions beyond the reach of practical reason ("Is it a good thing to eat meat, or make lobsters suffer?").

I think this about sums it up for me too. "I'm spiritual," says the dumb slut at the bar right before going home to fuck some neanderthal, or the dullard who wants to be a part of an on-the-spot religious conversation.

I think for most people, it's a load of bull shit that allows them to flop around like jello depending on what group they currently happen to be standing next to. Basically, an ass-kissers favorite response to being asked what he/she believes.

I have long assumed it meant whatever anybody wants it to mean.

1. Attachment/dedication to God.
2. Strong attachment to the soul aspect of humanity.
3. Strong attachment to higher qualities of humanity

I think sometimes Atheists use it in terms of 3.

In some ways I agree with Insanity X, spirituality has become a go to word for anyone who wants to make a point about what they believe yet can not prove. For me it is not a requirement of God that I have to nor need to prove His existence, what is required to be spiritual is having an ear for God and living the truth He places in my life, actually I believe that is a requirement for all Christians. So, when I use the word spiritual, I'm not trying to prove anything other than I listen to God and try to live as He desires, which mostly I fail at.
God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

In a word... electricity. A positive influence on the world around them, recharging those who have lost their spirit, like a battery once depleted and again restored to life. Spirituality is as encouraging as it is uplifting, for the well-spirited individual and morose alike. In revitalizing oneself and others, they can liberate their soul (their essence of being) from the shackles that bind them, free to embrace their world unrestrained, and with intimacy, gleaning all the pleasure from it they can muster.

It doesn't have to mean anything metaphysical, but to some it does, and hey: more happiness to them. I am quite content with my understanding of spirit.

A disconnect from reality. Bit like religion but more in tune with the individual than a deity.

The scientific definition should be "A bullshit word used to describe the entense neurochemical reaction in the brain that "feels real".

The closest I come to something most call "spirituality" for me is nothing more than an entense sense of awe in reaction to something I find mentally pleasing. Such as my cat's love, or my mom's love or a pretty sunset.

I can feel the same entense feelings people falsely call spirituality without assinging it to some vacuuous word. It is nothing more than an entense feeling. But there is no magic or super natural going on here.

"Spiritual" is just as vacuous a concept as god claims. It is merely an argument from ignorance.

entense, it doesn't exist!

I bolded and underlined these words.... I have to say one thing, at least you're consistent.... consistently writing a word wrongly, just shows you don't know the correct form: intense.
