Ah, but even though we've gone from the Jim Crow era to electing a black president, there's still that pesky racism problem that everyone tries to ignore or gloss over. It's progress, but perhaps not enough...
Point taken. We still have plenty of "dog whistles".
Our first black president is also the first president who's had to prove he's "one of us" by publishing his birth certificate, and the first president who's been heckled by a congressman during a state of the union address, and the first president repeatedly and seriously accused of being a "socialist". I don't think that's a coincidence.
Everything changes in stages. Old ideas die like radioactive particles decay with their "half lives".

Tick tock: Protestantism no longer the majority faith in U.S.

Depressing... Does this mean once we reach the point that people no longer identify themselves as Christian (as most racists would not consider themselves racist, whereas once that was a badge worn with honor, still is in some pockets of society) they would still cling to some of the ideals and morals that go along with being Christian? It's gonna take a lot of time and change before it totally disapates.

In the case of religion, I don't think so.
Religion depends largely on social pressure and indoctrination during childhood. As the majority no longer identify as Christian, the first part is gone.
I see a tipping point in the future. Christianity will lose almost all of its power once the non-religious are the majority.
Although the thought of "closet Christians" does conjure up some amusing comedy skits.

"Oh no! You don't think he could be... you know... one of them?"
"Oh what did we do? We tried to raise him right. How did he get caught up in that deviant lifestyle?"
"It's the fault of the media! They're always glamorizing the Christian lifestyle!"

So are you saying a faith in nothing is a faith?
But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.
