So why did this racist little sissy stay in office for so long ?

I've been through the polygraphs they give for high level clearances, and the issue isn't that you can't have had an affair, used drugs, had gay relationships or any other "problem" - it's whether the situation exists that you can be blackmailed with it. When Patraeus took over the CIA he would have needed to be re-polygraphed, and would have been asked questions that would have revealed the affair. So the question is why this didn't raise the issue at the time - or perhaps it did. Did he lie about it, or was this step skipped in his hiring, or did he reveal it and it's just now being used. I'm interested to see the answers to those questions as they are learned.
You say this like the general public is going to have access to his polygraphs... Somehow, I don't think the CIA would allow that to happen. At least not for the requisite, what is it, 50 years? By which time, I'll be 81 and won't give a flying fuck.

I feel horribly stupid... But who is that? Hoover? I majored in history, but I never took the time to match faces with the storyline

To me the entire "scandal" isn`t worth a damn.
Who realy cares if he had an affair? Why should it state anything about his competences?
Every single french president after De-Gaule, with the exception of Sarkozy and Hollande, had an affair and Francois Mitterand had an entire second family besides the one in the Elysee palace.
When Diana died in a car accident in Paris and Tony Blair called the elysee that night, the french first lady answered and stated:"do you realy think any french woman knows where her husband is at this time of the day."
As long as a politician wasn`t involved in anything illegal, I dont care if he had or has an affair.

I think it will come out in the inquiry that is sure to come.

When you work in intelligence, you can't have anything in your private life that leaves you open to blackmail.

Hoover's term in office pre-dates the creation of the CIA by more than ten years, and I doubt that he was ever polygraphed, thought I don't know for sure. Are you using "sissy"as a gay slur? If your point is that he could have been blackmailed for being gay, I think he had so much evidence on everyone else, and commanded the investigators who could dig up more, that no one would have thought that blackmailing him would have worked.

Forget about illegal, forget about sex. Things aren't as they seem. I am sure you realize this much is possible and much more.
Just below the surface of this farcical take-down of an elite manager of state security is the question: why are they firing him, exactly?
In Russia, Putin has cleaned house of his enemies a few times and this was all well-documented by American newspapers and magazines. But, some of same journalists have unethical connections to Petraeus, the US military, and therefore, the entire US ruling class. Here is where the real questions should be asked. But will they be? And, will Patraeus' alleged crimes against humanity ever be questioned and investigated by journalists who have a lot more to lose than David Hastings?
Stay tuned to "damage control American style", and be mindful of where you stand as errant pieces of wreckage fall.

He wasn`t fired. He resigned.

Americans love conspiracies. It's part of our nature.
