As a christian, how did you handle the problems with the Tower of Babel?

When you guys were christian, how did you handle the incongruities of the Tower of Babel story?
You know..
Heaven is in the sky and that bronze age men built a tower super high. God was afraid that mankind might sneak into heaven.
All of mankind spoke one language before the tower building and all known languages were created immediately proceeding the tiff.
Where the h*ll is the Tower?
How high could it have really been? If it was only 3 or 4 stories high, why would god have cared when he supposedly knew that in about four thousand more years mankind would make it beyond the moon.

Because God knew that given the drive and purpose of man we would have developed faster than we should have. He felt the need to slow us down a little.

Just another fantastical tale urging the duped not to fuck with god, or to explain something that the author couldn't.
It was one of the first of such tales that made me react with a big ol' "WTF"!!

working together? being a civilisation? is the UN a defiance of gods will? and will diplomats go to hell?
the washiest kind of nonsence phrase, am i glad i never heard such stuff as a child. but then, just like now, i probably wouldnt have given a fuck.

God was pissed off about the Tower and knocked it down, but has sat by quietly as we have attempted and successfully surpassed it a million times over.
The Babel story is a prime example of how religion is opposed to human achievement.

In the NIV version:
5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6 The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”
If a bunch of kids were trying to build a tower to reach up onto your roof, and you did something to scuttle their plans by splitting them up and then said that " I had to split these kids apart because together they can accomplish anything they set their sight to", then it is obvious to any non brain dead member of the human race that you were referring to the kids being able to have reached their original objective.
Furthermore, god came down from the heavens, which by the way, is the opposite direction the tower was going up. This also leads credence to the bible author believing that heaven was in the sky and the target for the tower.
Why does god use the plural form here? why does he say "Come, let us go down?"
