Senator Julian Assange?

Senator Julian Assange?
http://www.theage.com.au/opinion/politic...2ba43.html

A Wikileaks Party could be running candidates at the next Australian federal election and Julian Assange could be one of the candidates for the Senate.

I have little doubt Julian Assange if he were to run for the senate would get close to or even exceed the 14% quota to get elected to the Senate. Also a Wikileaks party could do quite well for a new political party.

Interesting.

Part of government does involve secrecy, especially with the military and law enforcement. I wonder how a wikileaks party would handle that.

I would see a wikileaks party with representation in the Senate as a challenge for both major parties in Australia. Because both major parties at the moment advocate stances such as censoring the internet. Such a political party would be a powerful antidote to the influence that Christian organisations like the Australian Christian Lobby have over our politicians.

However I cant see them being more than an "irritant" for the major parties, let alone being in any government. Julian Assange is seen by many Australians (across the political spectrum) as a hero and him leaking classified US military and diplomatic secrets in fact endears him to his admirers.

^ The federal government scrapped the plan of internet censorship in November. Assange has had this on the table for a while, but I doubt we'll see it happen at least this coming election.

I have little doubt that a future government, especially an Abbott Coalition one will try again to introduce it. The justification will be to protect people against smut and prevent theft of intellectual property.
