The coroner tells WTAE that the 12-year-old who isn't being identified was holding a black powder revolver when Troyer grabbed the barrel of the gun. That caused it to fire, fatally wounding Troyer in the chest.

As it happens I have a replica black-powder revolver and it is a single-action which means that the hammer must be cocked with the thumb which advances the cylinder to the next round  and then the trigger releases the hammer.  So, in order for what was described to happen someone took a lot of time to load the gun and the 12 year old must have deliberately cocked it.

Sounds fishy.

Putnam County teen shot, killed in apparent accident

Raynie Michelle-Marie Dettmann was shot in the upper body by the 16-year-old boy about 4:30 a.m. with a 12 gauge shotgun at her Pomona Park home. The boy had retrieved the shotgun from inside her home and first pointed it at two other friends. He then pointed it at her and pulled the trigger, deputies said.

A 32-year-old Hawi man died Saturday of an apparent accidental gunshot wound, according to Big Island police.

Detectives from the Area II Criminal Investigation Section determined that a rifle had been stored in the cab of Kondo's truck and that when Kondo attempted to pull it out of the truck by the barrel, an item inside the truck caught on the gun's trigger, causing it to discharge.

Don't pull the gun by the barrel.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

Cause of death = stupidity.

Name released of child killed in accidental shooting in Catlettsburg

Coroner Mark Hammond tells 13 News the victim was 12-year-old Halee Marshall.
In a previous interview, the girl's grandfather said she was helping her brother unpack his pickup and move into the house.
Hammond tells 13 News the gun, a 12 gauge shotgun, belonged to Marshall's brother and he was taking it into the house when it accidentally fired. Hammond says he didn't realize the gun was loaded.

Ah, yes... the old I-didn't-think-it-was-loaded routine.

Theodore man fatally shoots friend while playing with gun, Mobile County deputies say

In a complaint filed in court, authorities said Estabrook pulled out a .45 caliber pistol while at the house.

"(He) was spinning it around on his finger and it accidentally went off," the complaint said. The bullet struck 24-year-old Jacob Parker in the cheek, killing him.
