Using a mobile device in a theater is certaily bad form, but not something one should die for. The shooter is reported to be a retired police officer. Shocking, right?.

Maybe not but in that type of situation I'd place my bets on an armed victim having substantially better chances.

I made no such claim regarding the law. I am pointing out the fact that carrying a gun does not guarantee one safety from 'twats with guns'.

How? This isn't a western where both are expecting the conflict and the quickest draw wins. In most cases the person that's intent on using a gun to kill someone shoots before the other even has a chance to defend. I don't see how carrying a gun increases survival chances unless the initiator has terrible aim.

Were there survivors? If so, who's to say one of the survivors couldn't have ended the shooting spree?
