31. LIBERTY CO., TX, 6/13/14: A Liberty County man is recovering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound he sustained on Friday, June 13. According to Liberty County Sheriff’s Capt. Ken DeFoor, Bobby Ray Bernard, 48, and his wife, Sonya Bernard, 44, and their two young children, of Ames, were returning home from a day of fishing in the Galveston area when Bobby, while driving, decided to unload his 9-mm semi-automatic pistol. Bernard reportedly told Sheriff’s Sgt. Kenny Dagle that he was attempting to “jack” a round out of the pistol when it accidentally discharged, striking him in the upper left leg above the knee. After being shot, Bernard drove to Ames where he left his small children and put away the gun before driving with his wife to the Liberty-Dayton Regional Medical Center for treatment. He was later flown by air ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston where he is reportedly in stable condition and awaiting surgery. No charges are expected to be filed.

Washington, DC — States with weak gun violence prevention laws and higher rates of gun ownership have the highest overall gun death rates in the nation, according to a Violence Policy Center (VPC) analysis of new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.

Meanwhile, states with the lowest overall gun death rates have lower rates of gun ownership and some of the strongest gun violence prevention laws in the nation. However, even in these states the human toll of gun violence remains unacceptably high and far exceeds the gun death rate in most Western industrialized nations.

The VPC analysis is based on data newly released this week and refers to overall gun death rates in 2011, the most recent year for which data is available.

The five states with the highest per capita gun death rates in 2011 were Louisiana, Mississippi, Alaska, Wyoming, and Montana. Each of these states has extremely lax gun violence prevention laws as well as a higher rate of gun ownership. The state with the lowest gun death rate in the nation was Rhode Island, followed by Hawaii, Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey. Each of these states has strong gun violence prevention laws and has a lower rate of gun ownership.

A Texas man barged into his ex-wife’s book store on Friday and tried to gun her down with a pistol. According to the Associated Press, however, the gun malfunctioned, giving the woman time to run and call 911.

I guess this is why you stand on your porch and fire a few rounds ( see above) to see if your gun works. They probably mention that in one of those "safety courses" the gun nuts are always talking about.

I'd guess laws which prevent guns from being owned by the general population. Based on the constant drum beat of fuck ups by supposedly 'law-abiding' citizens, I'd say we need many more of them.

In an effort to “get more people to follow Jesus,” a Joplin, Missouri, church held a raffle giving away two Black Rain AR15 assault rifles.

On Father’s Day June 15, Ignite Church gave away two of the weapons as part of a marketing strategy to bring more young men into the fold, according to the Joplin Globe.

“If we get people in the door, we get to preach the gospel,” said Heath Mooneyham, Ignite’s lead pastor. “If we can get more people to follow Jesus, I’ll give away 1,000 guns. I don’t care.”

A 24-year-old woman was arrested in Reading, Pennsylvania on Sunday for allegedly waving her gun at a group of children playing in her neighborhood before firing, the Reading Eagle reported.

“I didn’t know what to think,” one witness said of the suspect, Billie Jo George. “It was like a joke to her. She laughed about it. I just hope the kids don’t have nightmares from it.”

OK gun range owner insists howitzer fired safely after shell blasts house 3 miles away
