CHUBBUCK — The 5-year-old girl fatally shot in a home on the 600 block of Canal Street, Noelle Aston Shawver of Blackfoot, was visiting the home when the shooting took place Wednesday afternoon.

A news release sent by the Chubbuck Police Department Thursday morning said it was another 5-year-old child who had accessed the firearm involved in the accidental shooting. Adults in the home at the time were in another room.

A three-year-old Pueblo, Colorado girl is in critical but stable condition after being shot by a five-year-old who was playing with a handgun.

According to police, a nine-year-old boy managed to get ahold of a handgun that was in the house. He was playing with the gun in the back yard when he handed it to the five-year-old, who pointed it at the girl and fired. The bullet passed straight through the girl’s body without breaking any bones.

And where were the parents? They were home....not watching the gun.

Every law-abiding blind individual should be able to have whatever guns they want. And if you disagree with that statement, if you haven’t thought it all the way through, you don’t take your rights seriously enough. Do you think because they’re blind, they’re going to start shooting in every direction and kill everyone.

I don’t necessarily think that, but I do know that a bullet leaves the barrel of a handgun at about 1,200ft per second and it’s favorite way of stopping is by hitting something or someone. It is very indiscriminate that way. It is already hard enough to hit something with a handgun, even if you are trained and have better than average vision. A report issued in 2008 said that New York City policeman hit their target “roughly 34 percent of the time,” which is a great batting average for a baseball player, but not so much for lethal lead slugs flying willy-nilly about, looking for a place to rest.

An off-duty police officer in New York reportedly shot his young son by accident on Tuesday night while unloading his gun at home.

The New York Post reported on Wednesday that Jon Gigantiello, an officer with the Metropolitan Transit Authority, was at their home in Smithtown, N.Y. and unloading the gun when it suddenly fired, wounding his own hand and hitting his 3-year-old son.

On a side note, I lived in Smithtown for many years. It seems to have changed for the worse.
