If you're not into playing games for windows, and you can live with some programs which are not your usual brand, linux would be a good bet.
Most linuxes work well on old hardware, if you remember not to use KDE nor Gnome 3 (Gnome 2 is OK). No... chrome is always here, just in case I need to log onto my other Gmail account... or any other account I don't keep always open in FF.
But the problem was https, not FF. And tib sorted it out! 
I mainly use Chrome.
I also have FF and IE loaded should it be necessary  Also have https, which may or may not interfere with my access to the interwebz; further I am about to embark on a rant (not pleaseant) to my ISP as to why we are paying good $$ for shoddy access!!
