While I do live in one of the more liberal bastions - the glittering Queen City of Charlotte - I can confirm that here, even in the northern parts of the Bible Belt, old-timer wastes of space who have opinions exactly in line with John V do exist. I was fooled by a website that runs similar news satire articles as The Onion. It ran one claiming that Ann Coulter refused to board a plane flown by a black pilot, citing affirmative action, etc etc. While I should have been more skeptical and cross checked it, I didn't. You see, that was a fake article, but it was word for word like many a conversation I have had with my overly-conservative, rather racist father.

The truth is stranger than fiction, in most cases. In John's, I suppose we couldn't know for sure if he's really this backwards or just trolling in a non-rules-breaking manner, but never lose the certainty in your head that there are people out there who DO believe this way. They walk the Charlotte street corners on Saturdays and Sundays blowing shofars (why they're making the music of my people, I'll never know) and howling for us to come back to the presence of god, to smite the gays and holding up signs against abortion depicting fetuses. We found a plastic fetus once, on a street clean.

You know, we atheists in Charlotte, we adopted a street and we clean it of trash regularly - even the trash the Christian (supposedly moral) protesters leave behind. All in a day's work.
