I was talking to my cousin the other day and we were discussing the pros and cons of getting married. It's not something that I have ever given a lot of thought to, but from what he said to me, I really don't see the point at all. But in the spirit of keeping an open mind, I invite anyone who is married or not against marriage to give me some reasons why it's either a good idea, or at least not a bad idea. I'm quite confident that I could probably counter any reason. But let's give it a try. Any takers?

Reasons to get married

Pro- It conveys some sense of certainty and continuity to your relationship that may help to develop it further

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I have had two marriages and three long term live-ins that were indistinguishable from my two marriages. The only difference I can say for certain was different was the absence of divorce attorneys. Now since the first marriage was in the good old days in Virginia there would probably have been a difference on getting the first home mortgage, more difficult to impossible. Can't think of anything else. "The Universe is run by the complex interweaving of three elements: energy, matter, and enlightened self-interest." G'Kar-B5
Only one reason I can see to get married and that's just legal perks. Most people I know of do it for that or just because its kind of expected.

Yeah lots of men think like that, and then when divorce time comes (53% of marriages end in divorce...70%+ of those are initiated by women) they get cleaned out, lose their home, and access to their own kids. Can't think of anything else. I didn't think about that. David and I have moved from "if we buy the condo" to "when we buy the condo" so I might have to get him to ask what the difference is between not being married and being married for our mortgage. marriage is only a financial arrangement before secular law. Nothing more.

Being married is the loss of one’s freedom. It will not allow one the freedom to make random decisions because a final approval will be needed. Every decision will now be a compromise between two people.
Don't read.
Oh I don't know about that, you can still make the same mistakes that you made before you got married (without first consulting the spouse) and the consequences remain, predictably, the same...lol.
