Sounds like a vote for option A.

So when the "student" has comprehensively shown up the "teacher", the teacher can run and hide under under that pretext and avoid showing his disgraced face.

Brilliant! Nothing short of Jesus can spark this inspiration.

Oh, wait, I recall reading something just like from Buddha and a bunch of others.

Nevermind.

My question is what is the core value/message of Christianity? My follow up question would be can that message stand on its own without a literal sacrifice or god? I guess what I'm really asking is if there is a value to the essential Christian world view which transcends the supernatural. I suspect such Christians do exist whether or not there are any on this site.

Okay for those who may be struggling with this may I suggest some multiple choice responses. If the teacher, or at least the loyal opposition shows up, perhaps they can suggest some other response alternatives.

(A) Self abasement is the way. Humble yourself. Strive to be a good sheep at God's feet. Cast out all pride. Don't think too hard about anything for truly the truth is beyond us. We are and will ever be as an infant before God. When you get a chance, climb up into God's lap and get a hug. That, in short, is the purpose of your existence.

(B) Live your life in such a way as to earn your ticket to heaven. Have all the fun in this life you can without getting that ticket cancelled. God loves to see his faithful rewarded with bounty in this life. Celebrate good times, people. Happiness is the reward of the righteous.

© The greatest happiness/fulfillment is found through self transcendence. Identify with more than yourself. Don't get hung up on your narrow self interest. Love (or strive to love) others as you love yourself. Don't make this life all about you.

(D) Other, please explain.

Forgive me but it sounds like you answered your own question re the core value/message. Did that have to be literal? I don't see why, though I must confess to not giving it much thought.

Yes and as for the Proverbs quote, you need to want to know, and not want too be ignorant, it's true. Hmm that came out wrong :)

Well I was kind of wondering if you thought there was anything in the core Christian message which has value whether or not one had ambitions for an afterlife and whether or not one thought the bible was authentic or even whether or not any one believes Jesus was a real person.

Ah right well yes I do. I think the message is to live in harmony with the natural world. How you reconcile that sans Christ is a mystery to me, hence why I believe what I do. Enoch did it, so everyone else can (in dogma speak). Maybe dogma is the biggest evil.

Interesting, isn't it? The only way I can make sense of the Christian message is if it's adherents would embrace it even without an afterlife, or god or the bible. If any would still claim it then it must be a valuable perspective. Any who hold to it only for the sake of the supernatural or the reward, are -from my point of view- failed humans.

Nope, I'm a roast...baste me with your wisdom.

I'm waiting, oh-wise one.

Studies have already shown that it is the Non-believers who are MOST likely to know the most about individual religions. So - to address that to an xtian is somehow meaningless - they really do not know.

There is NO SINGLE christian faith - there are literally tens of thousands of them - and if YOU ask one from each of the sects - they will give you LOTS of reasonable and logical reasons why ALL THE OTHERS are wrong. And that is true about all religions. So - if you want to know which religion is true - ask theists - they will ELIMINATE them all for you - in a reasonable and logical way too.

Me thinks you are very confused.

There are thousands of denominations within one faith, whom agree on core principles and call each other siblings. There are also non trinitarian Christians who would be classified as different faiths... But there number would be less than one hundred.

You kinda made your assertion of ignorance bite your ass. Well done!
