From what I have read of it it should to the job. However do not forget the cost of power supply and cables against that old computer in your closet.

It runs linux and you will have to write your own display software in C unless you can find what you want online some place.

RE: Raspberry Pi anyone?

I ended up buying a new 32" TV for $200. I bid on a few used TV's on eBay, but like everything else, the ones in good condition were going for prices that were near the price of a new TV on sale, and the advantages of buying new are obvious.

It's an Insignia, which is Best Buy's store brand. (I bought a 26" Insignia several years ago, and at the time, I was told the one I purchased was a rebadged LG.) I haven't bought the Raspberry Pi yet, mainly because they're more expensive than I had initially figured; not enough more to matter, but enough to make me hesitate. I need to check out the TV itself before I go any further (it arrived today).

I could throw together a simple HTPC, but the size and additional work makes something like the Raspberry Pi preferable. (WD TV Live media appliances are selling for $40+ on eBay, but I want more control over the display behavior than such devices offer.)

Anyway, I'm feeling sickly, so it may be a few days before I deal with the new tv. (And I finally settled on a 10" tablet. I purchased an Acer Iconia for about $230, refurbed. It's not everything I wanted, but it's about half the price of the Asus Transformer Infinity that I wanted.)

Yick. The TV was damaged while in UPS custody. The driver acknowledged the damage, but there was no visible physical damage to the product itself.

I plug it in and it's obvious that it took a significant impact to the screen. I'm guessing she fell on it with her knee or something.

Now I gotta go through a bunch of hassle. I hate shit like this.

I know I'm necro-posting, but I recently got a raspberry pi and I'm loving it!
Installed the raspbmc (port of xbmc) and it works like a charm.
However, I've noticed that it overclocks the pi from 700 to 800MHz.

But it does play MKV files @1080p with no stutter... and I was also apt-get'ing some details from an ssh prompt on my laptop.

I got the pi mostly to access a machine at home via SSH and that can be done.... it can also do many other things, which are cool, but not my main aim. I also wanted a machine that made little or no noise and little or no heat...and, so far, it's panning out as planned! Smile

You can safely overclock it to 1000Mhz, which is where mine is set.

Nice! Smile
But I'll let it stick with the 800MHz... "if it works, don't fix it"! Wink
