I think its a good thing, helps kids develop spacial awareness. And build stuff. I rather liked it when kid as far as I can remember.

I do seem to remember from my childhood, however, that organizing Legos is ultimately futile.

No!!! There has to be a way!!! I'll be completely demoralized if there isn't a way!!
ETA: when your kid does get into Legos, start by keeping them straight, otherwise you'll end up like me...

I baby sit for a kid with a room full of legos. He has them organized by creation( like all houses and house pieces, car and car pieces) He also has a bin of random pieces, people, basic blocks, and the ones he likes to play with most often. He even has new boxes he has yet to open. I hope that helps. Personally all my old legos are in the largest tub we could find and you have to sort it if you want to play.

Sandwich bags, and let the kids sort for their purpose. Allow me to explain.

I don't recall ever having these Lego sets with build instructions (70s), just some standard shapes and colors.

I remember in the 90s being frustrated that I couldn't find generic containers and had to purchase these pre-packaged designs for my kids (expensive). I soon discovered that my kids lost interest after the first build leaving me frustrated and wishing I had just gotten them a cheap jigsaw puzzle. After consideration I intentionally mixed all the pieces from multiple sets and challenged them to make something on their own.

The sandwich bag idea was my son's and he segregated the pieces on his own.

I'm thinking sort by color (extracting the Lego dudes and their accessories for their own bin) then by size?? It would be nice to have them all sorted by set and in nice ziplock bags or something... But all that would take FOREVER!

Good advice, Cato. I too dislike the prepackaged sets - they usually contain pieces that aren't useful for doing generic builds, and they're very expensive. I bet my kid has over $500 in legos.

When I was his age, all we had were square blocks, and we liked it that way.

Oh, and get off my lawn.

My solution -- wait until they were old enough to not play with legos any more and throw the multiple plastics totes, filled to the brim, in the trash.

With multiple kids, that will take about, oh 15-20 years.

BTW, I hate legos. Hate.

Oh no... I will pass them on to some other unsuspecting parent. The hatred of Legos must be shared. Kind of like when I was a teenager and found it amusing to get my niece and nephew the most obnoxious, loud toys I could find... I'm evil like that. But I must say, payback is a bitch.

Buy your kid Minecraft -dl the free FTB mod - watch how quickly the legos fall by the wayside - and rejoice in the fact that you'll never have to step on a single one of their much more complicated creations ever again.
