I was actually around 9-years-old when it first hit me. I was kind of like Lisa Simpson growing up. I was pretty smart for my age and a total science nerd. And it was also due to my parents teaching me to think for myself and analyze everything objectively. 
Up until the moment it happened I believed that a God probably existed because most adults seemed convinced. But then one day I was watching a video of some religious person ranting about how God is watching everything we do and that was when I had a startling thought.... Jesus (or Gods in general) is Santa Claus for adults.
And the more I thought about it the more convinced I became that it was all just a lie created so that people would behave a certain way.
* Jesus is always watching you. Santa is always watching you.
* Jesus will reward (with heaven) you if you are good. Santa will reward (gifts) you if are good.
* Jesus will punish (hell) you if you are bad. Santa will punish (no gifts and maybe coal in your stocking) you if you are bad.
* Some people think Jesus exists even though no one has ever seen him. Some people think Santa exists even though no one has ever seen him.
* People always talk about how Jesus and Santa are coming back to town sometime soon.
This was all quite disturbing to me at that age. I had known Santa wasn't real for a long time so I was wondering how so many adults had been tricked into believing this stuff. And then I made the mistake of actually reading the bible and things took a turn for the worse once I discovered some of the things in the book that so many adults worship..... lol
