rhetorical question: a question used as a figure of speech, intended to encourage the listener to consider a viewpoint; an answer is not generally expected, or even particularly desired. A time-honored form, commonly used in Shakespearean soliloquies, the rhetorical question often causes consternation in those unable to perceive irony.
- C. Neron
