The Last Movie You Watched
|
This weekend, I went to see:
Johnny English Strikes Again Plot: Rowan Atkinson (of Mr Bean/Blackadder and various other things) is a James Bond-esque spy, but who is also really dumb and accident prone. That's pretty much about it. Thoughts: Well, this is the 3rd one of these, and generally speaking they're all "fine". Like they are not terrible movies, and if anything, they are aimed at being a family movie that everybody can enjoy. I did honestly laugh once or twice, but a good 90% of the gags are very much aimed at children, so while you see something and understand it's intent at being funny, it's not as funny as something a bit more subtle. For example, most gags are "And then he fell over" which are not really for the grown ups. That being said, my daughter (who is 8) really enjoyed it and is a fan of the other movies, [which i've also been subjected too seen], and this was better than the second one. All in all, a bit of fun. Maybe more of a "Sunday afternoon on TV" kind of movie, rather than something to rush out and see in the cinema

Garbage. (October 4, 2018 at 11:50 pm)The Valkyrie Wrote: Just bought Solo on bluray. I'm interested in where they take that series (if, as I assume, it's going to be a series) because the Han in Solo is not the Han from eps IV, V and VI. In that respect I was quite confused by it and thought it would have been better if it weren't a Han Solo origin story but just a story about some people in the SW universe. If they can turn it so it shows Han becoming the cynical wise ass of Leia's dreams then I'll buy it as the origin story. With all that said, I loved Donald Glover as Lando and would see any future Solo movie as long as he's in it, and thought the origin of Han's last name "solo" was really really stupid. Not a movie itself but a making of of Halloween (1978) that's really good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bN6DEsqsbTY Makes me want to see Halloween which I haven't watched in years (I think the last time I saw it was in college when we couldn't get the subtitles to work for the deaf guy who was hanging with us - I never did ask him if he thought it was scary)

Margin Call. It's pretty bloody good and I'm surprised I didn't watch it earlier, even if it was just before Kevin Spacey's reputation was irreparably tarnished for being a sexual predator, making him less believable as the most consistently moral person in the whole film.

Closer
A stripper moves from New York to London, falls for an obituary writer/aspiring novelist who falls for a photographer who falls for a dermatologist. Partners are switched with a dizzying, confusing irregularity, often in flashback and flash-forward sequences. Some absolutely filthy language (which doesn't bother me) and dreadful overacting (which does). Mike Nichols is a terrific director, but this film makes you wonder if he's off some medication or other. One positive takeaway from this otherwise forgettable piece of dreck: Natalie Portman has a world-class bum. Boru

My wife brought home a couple of Redbox movies the other evening.
They were so forgettable I can't remember what they were called. The takeaway? Beware if my wife brings you two Redbox movies.
Downsizing. Funnily enough after a while Matt Damons size was irrelevant to the plot.
