The Last Movie You Watched
RE: The Last Movie You Watched
So, on Black Friday, I went to the movie theatre for what I'm fairly certain is the first time in a year to see JoJo Rabbit, and, honestly, I loved it. The only real flaws I can think of are that, well, the running gag of JoJo being treated as having a deformity after his grenade accident when it's just some bruises on his clothed areas and some facial scars doesn't quite make sense, mostly because of the long-standing German tradition of mensur, where students fenced (with swords with proper blades, mind you), often with the express purpose of coming out with a scar that looks just like JoJo's. Indeed, many wore these weird masks that made them look like insects with compound eyes and a beak (and also a throat guard), but which left the rest of the face vulnerable for some wicked scars which they could sew back together badly for something impressive and prominent. Then again, further research shows that, against my expectations, the Nazis actually banned it in 1935. Well, that and the fact that Elsa is barefoot for her first two scenes and then wears these thick wool socks for the rest of her scenes, which just seems a bit pointless. But that's just me. At least Thomasin McKenzie was 18 when her scenes were shot (and now to wait for the screenshots to be on Wikifeet.)

Also, I'm currently watching The Legend of 1900 and I'm currently loving it. Just, fuck, man, once you get past the conceit of a man born on 1 January 1900, named 1900, who spends his entire 45 years of life on a cruise ship and becomes a piano prodigy, it's a heartbreaking film, and as an underpubished writer of short stories living on the autism spectrum, I find myself relating a lot to 1900. And sometimes, I love how much of a troll he can be:

And later this week in the Deep Hurting Project, well, I've got three Christmas films to cover for the Project, and I intend to get them all out of the way this month. The first one (which will be in a few days): Elf Bowling: The Movie. (The other two, to come later in the month: Christmas in the West Edmonton Mall Wonderland and A Christmas Story 2.)

Finally got round to 'The Irishman'.  10/10.  There is absolutely nothing wrong about this film.  Might be Joe Pesci's best performance ever.

"Midway". Being a WWII scholar means you approach this genre with trepidation, eyes on gimbals ready to roll. My current wallpaper has a Dauntless flying over USS Washington with USS Enterprise in the background. (NOT Midway, that scene, probably a strike on Rabaul.)

Bottom line: For the less than absolutely fanatic the movie would do just fine. The Japanese get a reasonable amount of screen time and their actions are accurate as far as runtime will allow. The action is very well done if a bit fanciful in places. I watched this movie with two retired USN captains. We had a few elbow nudge moments but not nearly as many as I was afraid we'd have.

It looked too much like "Goodfellas" the Irish version in the trailer.  Everyone is saying it is good so I might watch it.

I went to watch Frozen 2 which I thought was boring as fuck.

I thought my 3 year old daughter was loving it but when it reached a really emotional part she said "Is it over yet? It's a bit too boring" so we left before it was finished.

The music was good, the plot was just rehashed old disney shit.

I also recently watched "Dream Killer" on netflix, a documentary film.

It was really amazing but so frustrating.  Similar to the documentary "Taken in plain sight" I was asking why WHY WHY WHY to so many judgement calls through the whole film.

Not just why people did certain things but why people didn't do certain things.  It was very entertaining though.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

It's not an 'Irish version'. It's about an Irish American who got involved with the mob.  It's like calling 'The Godfather' an Irish film because of Tom Hagen.

Was in the mood for horror comedy and a musical, so Anna and the Apocalypse

Quote:A zombie apocalypse threatens the sleepy town of Little Haven - at Christmas - forcing Anna and her friends to fight, slash and sing their way to survival, facing the undead in a desperate race to reach their loved ones. But they soon discover that no one is safe in this new world, and with civilization falling apart around them, the only people they can truly rely on are each other.

I suppose this could have also gone in the 'What Do You Know Today...' thread, but I'm putting it here, so deal.

'Crazy People'. Not great, not awful.  Cute premise - Dudley Moore is a stressed out ad-man who's insistence on truth in advertising ('Jaguar:  For Men Who Want To Get Handjobs From Beautiful Women They Hardly Know') lands him in a mental institution.  5/10.

Now the what I didn't know bit.  I've got a habit of looking up films I've watched on IMDB, mostly for the trivia.  It turns out that Darryl Hannah is missing about a third of her left forefinger due to a childhood accident.  She sometimes wears a prosthetic to cover it up.
