I tend to think that there was a real person that the myths are based on.
My reasoning is thus.
Being crucified was not a noble way to be killed, the apologists bent over backwards to make this ignoble death into something else.
It reminds me of the double think you get from the remainder of the branch Davidians, (of Waco fame) who try to present David Koresh as some sort of mystic figure fulfilling his destiny. When really he was an arsehole who got a lot of people killed.
