You're arguing with people who live and breathe the bible that they're wrong and you're right. Confronted with a myriad of logical justifications you stubbornly cling to your misinformation and parade it around like a fool with see through trousers. I'm sorry to fry you fr0ds, but a word salad usually isn't reason or fact. I live amongst people that know their bible, yet they all use it to their own whims. It is true that religion id used for foul purposes, it is also true it justifies some. Wouldn't it be great to avoid such fantasies in order to sort out real problems? Quote:Many times here I've seen atheists argue that black is white so afraid are they of losing a point. That doesn't make them right. Neither does it make a theist right that does the same thing. Does that confirm anything? Answer: that people are capable of bias. Bias does exist, and as a human being I do have it. But Religionists have much more than that usual bias. A preconception of a god, whatever it is. Associated with the 'good' book, its the cherry ontop of the cake. Couple that with age old hman pride and you have christianity, the oldest deux ex machina, jesus dies only to be resurected in glory. For our sins no less! Wouldn't it be great to throw out all the good ideas so we could sort out real problems? Sounds like a retrograde step to me. But I'm game
Now I have an idea. About a concept I'd like to call "God".... How do you work out that the religious have more bias? What special powers do you possess that makes you immune? Atheists are free to make their own rules. Lose your restrictions and enjoy life without all of that negative stuff that puts everyone down. No you're right... no reason to be an atheist (July 18, 2013 at 11:39 am)fr0d0 Wrote: How do you work out that the religious have more bias? Theists need god to be real in order to maintain the notion that life has purpose. They fail to realize that life is full of purpose even without a belief in god, and for this reason their bias toward needing god to exist blinds them to all reason until they think they are believing reasonably in their fairytale. There is nothing reasonable about believing in something for which there is no evidence, and that claim is proven every day. If one individual makes the claim that he has unerring faith in the monster which resides in his closet, he is considered insane. If millions of people believe in the same closet monster for which there is no proof, they are considered religious. Honestly, from my perspective, there is no distinction between insanity and religious faith.

There is no justification for an atheist world view. You must live with confusion. Desperation to cling on to some semblance of rationality drives you to cognitive dissonance. Bias is your middle name.

Quote:You must live with confusion. Desperation to cling on to some semblance of rationality drives you to cognitive dissonance. Er, that would be a far more easily applied claim to monotheists of the Abrahamic religions, whose God has rather nonsensical (and thus meaningless) attributes, which adherents must then attempt to square through Olympic-level mental gymnastics, only to find themselves contorted upon the ground in defeat. You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
