Irish government passes legislation allowing abortion if a womans life is at risk!

-The Government has passed legislation for the first time allowing for abortion in limited circumstances.

-Shortly before 12.30am, TDs voted by 127 to 31 in favour of the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill.


-The landmark legislation enshrines a woman's right to a termination if her life is at risk, including from suicide.

-Meanwhile, new figures show that an average of 11 women a day travelled from Ireland to Britain for an abortion last year.

I have a feeling there is some restriction like that in the UK, as well? I'd need to google to be sure, though.

At any rate, I've never known anyone who was refused an abortion on those grounds.

Subject to the provisions of this section, a person shall not be guilty of an offence under the law relating to abortion when a pregnancy is terminated by a registered medical practitioner if two registered medical practitioners are of the opinion, formed in good faith -
(a) that the pregnancy has not exceeded its twenty-fourth week and that the continuance of the pregnancy would involve risk, greater than if the pregnancy were terminated, of injury to the physical or mental health of the pregnant woman or any existing children of her family; or
(b) that the termination of the pregnancy is necessary to prevent grave permanent injury to the physical or mental health of the pregnant woman; or
© that the continuance of the pregnancy would involve risk to the life of the pregnant woman, greater than if the pregnancy were terminated
(d) that there is a substantial risk that if the child were born it would suffer from such physical or mental abnormalities as to be seriously handicapped.

No stronger argument can ever be conceived of for how beneficial abortion can be than how much better the world would have been if "virgin" mary aborted her fetus instead of cococt some story about her still being a virgin to cover her trails.

And it took them until 2013 to get that far. Meanwhile here in the States we have people who would like to reverse our reproductive freedoms to Ireland's level.
