Hell doesn't exist. I mean it's so very very far fetched. The buddhists have their version of hell and the level of hell you go to depends on what kind of bad things you do, and the whole system is better laid out than the Christian version. So if there's this "hell" thing that's supposed to exist in some dimension or spirit world we can only see after we die and our brains and sensory organs are gone, the chance that the Christians got it right? Slim.

I agree with GC. But that should only bother you if you're intending becoming a Christian again. If you don't believe, what relevance is it to you?

Hello MonkeMan! Don't worry, it takes a long time for some of us to get over this. You are still in the doubting phase and that is perfectly ok. Repeat after me: "I am not going to hell because there is no hell." It helps.
I'm sure the people who are actual Christians can give you a better answer (and I would hope that it would be "no". That is what I would have answered back in the day because I believed in a god of love) as we ex-christians tend to be a bit biased. I can tell you that if someone tortures you forever simply because you insulted one of their split personalities they are one of the biggest villans of all time. They do not deserve your respect or obedience. (Sometimes it is easier to get angry than it is to get scared ) Edit: Don't get too angry (lots of new atheists fall into this trap) Remember that god doesn't exist and that people who are trying to convert you back are not evil. They just don't want to see you suffer and are a bit misguided.
Any spelling mistakes are due to my godlessness!
What most everyone else has said - with one or two notable exceptions - but I'd just like to add this.
Would you, for instance, buy a car (or a loaf of bread, or whatever you like) from someone who threatened you with unimaginably outrageous amounts of harm if you don't instantly part with your cash? Because that's all that religion has in their armoury. Believe or burn. Once you come to realise that threatening you is all they can do because their position is just that weak and pathetic, you'll know you can simply turn your back and walk away. I'll illustrate further. You'd better start believing in invisible pink unicorns right now, because if you don't, the Queen of the unicorn union will visit you while you sleep and stomp all over you. Not very convincing, is it? "If you don't believe in this thing that I do, then I believe that something pertaining to the thing you don't believe will get you! Won't you be sorry!"
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

After all, this life is all you have before eternal damnation. You're climbin up the wrong tree I do believe, Friend.
If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!
Quote:The sin is against an infinite being (God) unforgiven infinitely, therefore the punishment is infinite. Dead wrong. The actions of a finite being measured against an infinite one are infinitesimal and therefore merit infinitesimal punishment. Quote:Some people deserve hell. I say again: No exceptions. Punishment should be equal to the crime, not in excess of it. As soon as the punishment is greater than the crime, the punisher is in the wrong.
If you're afraid of going to hell, OP, let me ask you this: how much time have you seriously spent worrying about all the other hells you could be going to? Even when you believed, how much energy did you spend biting your nails at the thought of the muslim hell you could be landing in? Or all those little offshoot christian groups that believe anyone who doesn't think like them is hellbound, how often did you concern yourself with the possibility that they were right?
Once you realize that the answer is probably not at all, it may help resolve your lingering fears of yet another fictional stick, to theism's equally fictional carrot.

I look at it this way. Once you realize that something that was supposedly offered to you in love (christianity and god so called love) was actually not really and was offered in fear or rather to make you fear why would you still want to follow that god even if he was real. You believed your loving god because you were scared of him not because you loved him so how loyal could you really have been and if you are not really that loyal and it seems you are here in this place why bother being afraid of hell. Give it the finger seriously. |
