Difficult for me to read this thread to be honest. We had to put out beagle down last year and our Belgium shepherd is now 15. I know we will have to do the same for her soon but she is holding on at the moment.
My sympathies for your grey. 
My cat's being put down today so I can sympathize a bit.
On the plus side he's had a good life at 16 or 17 years old, which is pretty old for a cat and he's lucky in the way he doesn't know he's going to die. Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them. Impersonation is treason.
