Just because you believe your god to be just and fair doesn't make it so.

Go to Turkey and get caught stealing and see how long you keep your hand, it's still used today and they do not believe in the Christian God.

You mean your fuckshit religion isn't as bad as you like to pretend someone else's is.

Apparently.

Quote:Effectiveness as a deterrent is quite relevant.
Sure. Let's just hand down death for every transgression. Can't get more effective a deterrent than that, right?

Quote:I'd say loss of a hand is much less serious than loss of ability to reproduce.
If you're a B.C. farmer or housewife, the loss of a hand makes almost every task you need to do to subsist is made either vastly more difficult or impossible. You can still work a farm or perform a craft without a penis. Losing a hand would objectively be a far more serious punishment.

Quote:Compromise implies imperfect people. Jesus says straight out that OT divorce law was a compromise.
A god restricted by the imperfections of the people he made can not be termed perfect.

Quote: Typical liberal more concerned with the perpetrator than the victim.
Yeah, because it is of material benefit to the victim that the perpetrator is given a savage and disproportionate punishment.

Typical theist, justifying atrocities by whatever means necessary.

I wouldn't get caught...in Turkey. Nor do I care to ever again be incidentally subject to retarded ass religious 'justice' by a foreign entity. It's anachronistic, draconian and not very evolved. Time to shed the superstitious BS.

The real irony of this statement is that Turkey is one of the countries in the middle east where they won't cut off your hand for stealing. They have a secular constitution and don't have Sharia law. I'm also not sure what that has to do with anything though. If you support that passage in the bible (and indeed many of the Old Testament laws) you support something very similar to Sharia law.

It's very hard to get a straight answer about whether or not these guys (GC and John V) support the cutting off of hands as an appropriate punishment for assault. John V has been dodging the question hard.

The government being allowed to maim people is not sensible.

Don't think you are so much better than the Turk, G-C. Your stupid ass religion is merely older and has had more time to mature. One does not need to go back too far in time to see how brutal you fine xtian bastards were.

Quote: in the Sixteenth Century, under the reign of Henry VIII, as many as 72,000 people are estimated to have been executed. Some common methods of execution at that time were boiling, burning at the stake, hanging, beheading, and drawing and quartering. Executions were carried out for such capital offenses as marrying a Jew, not confessing to a crime, and treason (Bedau 3).

The number of capital crimes in Britain continued to rise throughout the next two centuries. By the 1700s, 222 crimes were punishable by death in Britain, including stealing, cutting down a tree, and robbing a rabbit warren

When you're a person who glorifies genocide and slavery, such a belief is sensible.

False dichotomy and/or slippery slope fallacies, with a dash of appeal to emotion.

A big family can do a whole lot more than a single hand.

Sure he can. God is perfect. See?

I never said it was appropriate in Turkey and I do not think it's the way to go today, we have jails to use now. We support our jails with taxes today, in those times they had few prisons and not nearly the economy to support a jail system, heck we can't afford the system we have now. We put so much into our criminal system we can't afford to give kids the schools they need. Remember when this law was given the Israelites were wonders in the wilderness, they had no jails at all, even when they took Canaan there were no real jails.

God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

John, you haven't established the existence of god, so saying he's perfect is no good in this argument.
