That's odd. I've never had that type of issue with the free version of Avast and I've been running it for years (with no viruses either). Recently, their upgrade notifications have gotten a little pushy, but even that is a once-a-month type of thing.
You probably didn't have a machine full of malware when you installed it. The free version doesn't have 'real time' protection.
