What's everyone up to right now?

Pretty lady, doing manly construction-like stuff... what did you expect?
It's a technique where you try to find some common ground to start a conversation and see where it goes from there. In your case, the common ground was in plain view.
It's a great opportunity to meet people, you know... why did you feel creeped out?

It's not all men and not all the time. Some have the creep factor and some don't. Grandpa types are usually more funny than creepy and it has a lot to do with the approach. This guy yesterday was creepy.

Even my coworker thought the guy yesterday was creepy so it wasn't just me.

I was at a VA facility popping ceiling tiles on a ladder is a skirt and heeled boots and you wouldn't imagine how many men would stop and ask if I needed help or would tell me I shouldn't climb a ladder in heeled shoes (blame my coworkers who didn't want to climb the ladder for that). None of those guys were creepy or weird, that was more of a "you don't see that everyday" thing. When you have no reason to stop and comment or you come back for "seconds" it gets weird fast.

And FYI when this happens at work I'm not worried about my safety. There are always ALWAYS people around and not for a moment have I ever thought these guys were threatening. Just creepy and weird.

It's a windows thing... not just XP. It does the same thing with USB sticks.

From your point of view, JM, I think I'd just be annoyed to have to keep telling people "sorry but I'm working here". Can't imagine what it must be like to be the sex that is hit on. (When I was very young I thought it was immensely unfair that shy little me had to do all the asking out.)

I'm curious what exactly you find creepy instead of just annoying. Do you feel like a prized cut of meat?

Chillin' after completing my first (short) week of work.

I'm two blocks from the 16th Street Mall, 10 minutes walk from the State Capitol Building, Union Station, the Denver Public Library main branch and more places to eat and drink than I can name. Big Grin

And, the summer babe watching season is getting under way. I love working downtown!

I think it's because I always wanted to move to Murica, but New York or L.A aren't realistic with their fashionable prices and Atlanta looks like the next coolest place

Yep. If you like 90+ degrees with 90+ percent humidity all summer long, Atlanta's your place. If, however, you like being able to go outside, spring, summer, fall or winter, Denver is the place to be.

There were two guys yesterday, one grandpa type and one creep.  (There was also a baby, but she was just interested in the noises from my tape measure) Smile

With the grandpa, when I was measuring something he commented something like "you memorize all those measurements?" and I replied, "Nope, I write 'em down" pointed at my clipboard on the floor, we exchanged smiles and went our separate ways.  No harm, no foul.

With creepy guy, I was sitting off to the side in the main corridor of the facility counting ceiling tiles and he walked past with one of the usual "What's she looking at?" looks, stopped, walked back to me, asked me if I worked there.  I said, I didn't, but that I was just there doing work for the facility.  He walked a little ways, looked back, came back, tried to talk to me some more (about what I can't remember exactly, but I indicated that I was with an architecture firm working on the building), and then he kept walking.  I carried on with my drawings and walking down the corridor in his direction.  I stopped in the corridor outside the waiting area he was in, measuring ceiling heights and soffits and stuff, and he came out of the waiting room, stood in the corridor and watched me in a very uncomfortable way.  I ignored him and kept working.  Then he started telling me about some movie he saw once about a skyscraper that caught on fire and how the main character, an architect, was blamed because people died or something (I wasn't paying attention, I was working), and I kind of "uh-huh'ed" and "right'ed" as he talked, trying to concentrate while he talked and creepy-stared.  Then my coworker came over to the area I was in and the guy went away.

It's an extremely uncomfortable feeling being watched like that and I, at least, never really know how to handle the situation and I'm generally not the type that enjoys that kind of attention anyway.  If I say something to the guy I run the risk of making my firm and the facility look bad, since I'm basically there as a representative of both, and we need to be very cognizant of things like patient privacy, maintaining regular function of the facility, and need to remain pretty discreet (as discreet as you can be whipping out a tape measure).  If I don't say anything, I'll be creeped out for maybe five or ten minutes and then I move on to another area and the likelihood is I'll never see the guy again.  So I just tolerate the discomfort, try and ignore him, get my work done more quickly and move on.

That sounds Asperger-y. Especially the sort of compulsive need to come finish thoughts. Also, the lack of attention to social cues, and the attention to key words like architecture firm and relating that to something tangential. Could it be the guy was there getting treatment for a mental handicap?

And if you prefer year around outdoor access without having to shovel your car out of the snow, come to coastal California. Just boringly balmy.
