A vessel I'm assigned to work has registered dangerous levels of gas in one of its holds -- high enough for the Coast Guard to issue a restriction, stopping cargo operations until the problem has been addressed. As things stand at this moment, there is a distinct possibility of an on board explosion. My work life could get mighty interesting in the near future.

But there is a crew of 22 on board, as well as a number of surveyors and marine chemists. There was an explosion on this same vessel after it departed Asia after loading its cargo. That incident is what has caused the further build up of gases in the hold. Currently, the hydrogen levels detected near the bilge pump are 25% higher than what is deemed minimally safe. Not good. |
