Just finished playing a boardgame version of The Pilgrim's Progress that my sister picked up for a quid at some fair or other. Going by the box art, she thought it was a Discworld-style family game; especially since it's aimed at kids five and up. Let's just say that while Bunyan's work is probably a genuine masterpiece of seventeenth-century English literature (and summarised as a kid's story in the rulebook), the game is much more entertaining than any Discworld one could ever be - and for all the wrong reasons. The whole point is to work your way around the board to reach the Celestial City, represented by a cardboard castle that you have to piece together. The winner gets to finish building it and then stand their little cardboard character on top. I know; thrilling. On the way you pass various selected allegories from story - The Slough of Despond, The River of Death, Hill Difficulty - plus a few characters such as The Evangelist, The Atheist (of course, he tells you that heaven isn't real and sends you back to the start), Mr Worldly Wise the hippie... Ok he's not a hippie, but he is drawn like one. The only function any of these serve is to tell you how many turns you lose for landing on their square.
To say the game wasn't exactly thought through is an understatement. It got to the stage where the four of us playing it - me, my sister Tracy, my nephew Chris and niece Rosie - were trying to keep track of whose turn it was to miss their turn and how many we'd missed already. At one point, there's a square instructing you to "move forward one space" - straight to a square instructing you to "go back one space". We ended up in a kind of causal loop, vacillating between the two. Chris thought about tweeting the publisher, Candle Books, asking for their advice, saying we've been playing for a forthnight now and we're still stuck.
I've found it for sale on eBay for a tenner, or nearly double that on Eden.co.uk ("the UK's no. 1 online Christian store"). They list it as "our 6522nd best seller", which should tell you everything you need to know. It's very educational... well it taught me a lesson, anyway.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'
