They're not mutually exclusive. Both can work... and at once too!

There are only so many ways I can redesign a reception counter template, and in the last two years I've done at least four versions... I'm running out of ideas to shake things up. The hospital system for the project I'm working on has standard templates they use for all of their facilities - standard layouts for exam rooms, procedure rooms, weigh-in stations, reception areas, labs, offices, etc. so that docs can go from room to room (or facility to facility) and everything is in the same places. It's sort of like working with legos - the pieces are regimented and very standard but you can assemble them in different ways and use different colors and get different outcomes, but they all look like things built with legos. The reception counter template refers to the shroud that is built to hide the receptionist's desk like this: You combine these reception desk "blocks" to create reception desk areas, and every reception area will be slightly different (desks will be angled, staggered, rotated, mirrored, etc.) so you get natural variation from location to location but always with repetition of the standard template. I finally got something going that's sort of working out and looks nice but I suspect it will be too expensive. ![]() Mostly, working on these desks really bums me out especially since the coolest one I've come up with to date will probably never be built because the project was more or less scrapped. (It had concrete tiles with LED lights embedded in them, this cool rustic wood juxtaposed against a sleek solid surface counter, a nice decorate glazing component, a kick-ass $20,000 light fixture above it...)
Teenaged X-Files obsession + Bermuda Triangle episode + Self-led school research project = Atheist.
