I'd go with indicator first, then check if the path is clear.
I want to go that way, I tell everyone about it.... then I check if it's at all possible... maybe some of them decide it's a good time to overtake me and speed up, giving me a larger gap to get in behind them. Or... they slow down and, by the time I check in the mirror, I'm good to go! Wink
Totally circumstantial, of course!
I throw the indicator and give everyone in the next lane about half a second to decide if they want to trade paint. Driving a POS has its advantages.

Just make sure you don't run out of indicator juice. Seems many in my part if the country conveniently forget to check this when they drive.
