km - kilometer = 1000m
hm - hectometer = 100m
dam - decameter = 10m
m - Meter = 1m
dm - decimeter = 0.1 m
cm - centimeter = 0.01m
mm - millimeter = 0.001m
What I mean is a standard measurement that's longer than a decameter (which in Imperial is a little less than 4 inches) but shorter than a meter. Because meters are set up on a base-10 system, it's really strange and inconvenient to divide a meter by 3, so the closest measurement that would work would, I guess, be a quarter meter, 25cm, or about 9.8 inches. Why would ... divide by 3?! that's just to come close to your well known and intuitive "foot".
My intuitive is the 20cm, which is roughly a palm from the tip of the pinkie finger to the tip of the thumb, well stretched out.

Already stated: because of my job.
I fully grant this is as much a personal preference thing as it is a convenience thing.
Also, having a base-12 measurement system also means that people who work in fields that utilize measurements get really really really good at their 3, 4, 6 and 12 multiplication tables, so there's something to be said for that system making some segments of the population slight more math-literate
yeah... we get to divide by 2... 5... and that's enough! anything else, forces the usage of decimal points... there's a segment of the population that gets good at using those, though... and using approximations 1/3 = 0.33. 1/4 = 0.25, 1/5 = 0.2, 1/6 = 0.166, 1/8 = 0.125,

It took us three hours to buy two bags of groceries last night, because we don't know the area, Luckie has a tendency to drive off before I've gotten the map loaded, and she also doesn't like taking direction on the road. For example: "turn around here, we're going the wrong way," got completely ignored... right up until the point that we were driving up to the gates of an air force base, whereupon a nice man with a gun let us do a u-turn in their parking lot.
We had, indeed, been going in the complete opposite direction.

If I were the person to espouse gender stereotypes, I'd say from your description Luckie is clearly the man in the relationship

Eff yeah!
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
