The problem is that 90% of the noobs play on EU2 and this is where autoselect usually sends me. This is why I choose EU1.

I thought the selection was based on the server ping at logon, not player skill.

It is ping based but the skilled players prefer EU1. Besides my ping to EU1 is with 8 ms faster than EU2. I know it's an insignificat difference but old habits die hard.

Considering my Fashion Hunter options: right now my Monster Hunter character looks like Robin Hood collided with a Mariachi, complete with a pair of twin blades that have green pom-poms on the handles, but I have the option of moving on to purple leather biker, or kabuki luchadore wrestler if I desire. It's a hard choice.
