Sitting here with My clarinet Clara III. Going through a binder of Christmas music and smoothing out the tricky bits in preparation for a whole bunch of concerts.

My bottom lip is going numb from a manic triplet ostinato in "I Saw Three Ships." Please send mass quantities of brandy, STAT.

Just finished ordering Christmas gifts for my grandchildren. I have one grand-daughter who . . . isn't quite right. She wants a doll I hadn't heard of prior to my daughter mentioning it: Blissa.

Turns out that Blissa is a Barbie product -- a cat doll that takes a dump and comes with her own litter box. Since the child has an actual cat that shits in a box, I'm at a loss to understand why this is something she wants. However, I'm told that she has been talking about this thing since last Christmas and that I'll be the holiday hero for giving it to her.

Great. Years from now, she'll have a conversation with a friend or lover and recount her earliest memories. She'll speak of the grandpa she didn't see much of when she was little but who once gave her a cat doll that pooped. They'll laugh and agree, "What a strange, fucked up thing to give a little girl!"

I'm going to be that guy.
