What's everyone up to right now?
RE: What's everyone up to right now?
Watching Gonzaga versus Ohio state in the NCAA tournament. I don't normally watch basketball, but this is okay.

Watching the 12 Hours of Sebring. I need to check in with Ohio State and Gonzaga. One whole arm of my extended family is originally from Ohio (the Cleveland area, but everybody seems to root for OSU in that state). One uncle on that side has lived in the Seattle area since '84 or so (Boeing job). Still a Buckeyes fan, I think, but also a huge Gonzaga fan, even though that's over in Spokane---several hours east. He's just sick of the UW Huskies, because that's who everybody around him likes (I've never asked about Seattle U, but they're not in March Madness this year, I don't think).

What else is in the selection?

It's definitely simplified.  My solo works out to 16 bars, and I've got them roughed out and at least know what I'm dealing with now.  Have to strike a balance between playing it as written or sneaking in some fancy bits, and as discretion is the better part of valour I'll probably opt for a cleaner, simpler line.

There's also a trumpet solo immediately preceding my solo.

Overall structure of our band is varying numbers of alto, tenor and baritone saxes, clarinets, trumpets, trombones, electric bass, electric guitar, piano and drums.

They give you a solo, you're allowed to improv.

I was asking about other songs. Guess I could have been more clear.

We have the Beatles tune "Get Back," "Serenade to a Cuckoo" (Roland Kirk), "Fat Burger" (George Vincent), "Somebody That I Used To Know" (Luiz Bonfa), and "My Funny Valentine" as probable numbers.  We're also working on "Mack the Knife" but are still in the deer-in-the-headlights stage, and it probably won't be ready for the show.

You're doing Cuckoo as a stage band? That's got to be an interesting arrangement. I'm impressed.

Edit: Is there going to be a vid???

We usually have someone doing a video recording, but unfortunately the sound quality hasn't been all that good.  The band seems to get bigger every week, and to get everyone into the shot the camera is usually up on a balcony near the back of the hall.  I may have to smuggle in an audio recorder and put it closer to the band, because where *we're* sitting it sounds pretty good.

Got tired of trying get my brawny arms between the toilet tank and the counter, and had my son break out his electric oscillating cutter and gut it. The plumber who worked on it many years ago when I was on travel broke a chunk off the tank, I see. Dodgy At least I can now get into the tank from straight above. And the wife wants the cut off chunks made into a shelf. Doh

Watching Arcade Fire trend on Twitter. Apparently for bad reasons.
