Worked up some first-chair clarinet parts for rehearsal tomorrow night (I'm second chair but am the designated sub if the firsts are MIA.) Got a chance to practise that cool melody in Ravel's Bolero. Also spent some quality time with Ada, my alto clarinet, and fussed a bit with the B flat key which was sounding, uh, more like B sharp.

At first it was surprisingly hard to not squeak on the lower keys. Had to form a slightly different embouchure to adjust to the larger mouthpiece, and now have things relatively under control. When those low notes come out clean, though, they are gorgeous. Might eventually buy a new mouthpiece when I have some spare cash lying around. RE: What's everyone up to right now?

Finished a big critique of my latest short story. Overall, they liked it, but they didn't like the detachment I put in my narration (I may have autism, but I did not like it when one person suggested I make the main character autistic; that isn't the story I wrote and that's not the mental condition I wrote for him), and I think I really need to set up the parallels between the main character's plan and the "good guy with a gun" fantasy ubiquitous in American culture and how it's not all it's cracked up to be. I'm thinking more allusions to classic westerns, setting up his detachment as a defense mechanism that ends up failing him, and playing up the chaos in the final shootout.
Also, to decompress, I wrote a review of A Matter of Life and Death for my column.
Comparing the Universal Oneness of All Life to Yo Mama since 2010.
