Listened to a bunch of lectures, did some more walking, had a couple of beers. The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada now has a commemorative $20 coin (already sold out) and two commemorative postage stamps (we all got a first day cover of the stamps). Our meeting was also invaded by a horde of wily philatelists who had come for the stamp unveiling.
Currently sitting in the hostel lounge catching up on my Internet trouble-making, and planning tomorrow's itinerary.

Listening to the thunder, still drinking coffee because I woke up late, and pondering my to do list. It's long. I'm off for the next week, so looking forward to some relaxing time.

Watching the Twins game. We were doing good until the bottom of the fifth, when the Cubs absolutely murdered us.

Found a strange glitch while trying to rip some CDs last night. On Wednesday, I ripped this recording of Mozart's Clemenza di Tito from my library's CD to my computer. When it was done, I noticed something strange: normally, when a CD is ripped, Windows sorts it into a sort of My Music->Artist->Album->Tracks filepath. Unfortunately, the Artist and track names were too damn long. I didn't get to see the whole name they gave for the artist, but it included one of the singers, the conductor, the chorus, and likely more. The tracks all started with "Mozart - Clemenza di Tito" and then the passages in each track. As a result, the tracks whose file paths were too long weren't integrated into the proper system, so they were just dumped in My Music. I shortened the folder and file names, and it seemed to work well, at least until I ripped Green Day's new album last night. Then, I noticed that the folder I had retitled "Clemenza di Tito" had split into another folder with the old artist's name and what I think were the tracks whose original titles were short enough to fit in the original filepath. I merged them yet again, and I decided to rip another album I had on CD but hadn't converted to digital (the original Footloose soundtrack). They split yet again. I decided to delete the original rip of Clemenza di Tito and (after ripping Alice's Restaurant to make sure the chimeric tracks didn't show up yet again) re-ripped it, this time, with the shorter Artist and title names. Things went well, and after ripping Skynyrd's first three albums with nothing unusual happening, it's safe to say I have this problem licked. So I went to bed after that, about 1 AM.
If anyone else has had this problem, does what I did sound about right, and that, barring me ripping any new CDs with unusually long path names, this problem isn't likely to recur?

What ripper are you using?

Windows Media Player. I've used it for well over a decade and nothing like this has happened before. Then again, since I deleted the old rip and replaced it with a new rip, nothing like it has happened since (and I did quite a few rips just to be sure!)

And just to put my issues with the Windows Media Player ripper and "My Music" folder into perspective, since I can't edit my last post, I should mention that, after deleting the original rip of the problem CDs, I managed to rip eight others in my collection (not including the re-rip of the one that caused the problem), and I have had no other problems. I am 99% certain that it's been properly resolved. And I also talked about the issue with my Dad, who has been working with computers since they used punch-cards, and he thinks the way I describe it, the problem appears to have been resolved and shouldn't recur, barring another run-in with a classical CD (I strongly suspect it would be classical) whose pressers lack any restraint in metadata embedding. Then again, with my OCD, that nagging 1% makes me wonder. Then again, given that my compulsion, at least in this episode, seems to involve ripping CDs in my (exceptionally large) collection to see if anything strange happens, this episode of OCD could very well not be that bad.

Whenever things go to shit on my laptop, I just reboot it. Firefox gets stuck occasionally on updates. I know now to reboot to get the conflict resolved.
