What's everyone up to right now?
RE: What's everyone up to right now?
My luck just keeps on going. I bought a spindle of Bluray media. I decided it was such a good deal that I ordered two more spindles before it dawned on me that there might be an incompatibility between it and my Bluray burners. The first one I tested bombed. And the second one wouldn't even recognize that a blank Bluray disk was inserted. So I start looking at firmware upgrades, and in the process discover that the first drive isn't even a Bluray writer -- it's read-nly for Bluray. I'd forgotten I even had one. Once I located the other of my two burners and hooked it up, the second burner handled the new media just fine. Oh what a relief it is! I can't help but think I've dodged a bullet here tonight. Unfortunately the testing took so long that I'm not sure that I'll get anything else I'd planned done tonight. I was going to move the spare flatscreen TV off the old file server and restore its position as a second monitor for this desktop. That I can probably do. The reason for that was to make reconciling my personal budgeting and expense records and food stamp records with my online statements easier. I'm not really motivated to start that tonight. I guess that's what the snooze button on Google calendar is for.

Please forgive my ignorance; you bought some burnable Bluray discs?

Just curious. These days all the stuff I watch is MP4, including 3D.

I just found Boris in the washing machine. Boris is the huntsman spider who has been living with me for the last 20 years.Took a while to get him out without hurting him. (Boris doesn't like to be touched)

Boris eats flies. We have a deal; I don't walk on his ceiling and he doesn't walk on my floor. Finding him in the washing machine was most of character. I do hope isn't developing dementia.

Went looking in the attic and finally found the elusive stuffed Big Bird I used to own. As planned, I created the little index card about the sturm and drang that Carroll Spinney went through in his early years on Sesame Street.

And for the little narrative card:

Note, this is not a direct quote from Spinney, but if you watch I am Big Bird, this is more or less accurate a depiction of his early years. Which is more than I can say for the doll. Watching that documentary just after I pitched an accounting internship to my boss, and being overwhelmed when he actually said Yes, put it all into perspective.

The discs are for data backup, not movies or video. And I have a ton of video in DVD-VIDEO format, and am starting to collect mkv/mp4 as my blu-ray ripper uses those formats. DVD-VIDEO is still the default choice for ripping DVDs though, as transcoding to MP4 or whatnot is time intensive and basically wasted if I can just store it in DVD-VIDEO format. I rarely burn any video to disc as playable discs. No need to do so, my computer is hooked directly to my bigscreen TV and so I can just play it off the hard disk drives. I don't even own any DVD or CD blank media anymore.

Just one Huntsman?
I grew up with thousands.
Ditto for cockroaches, cane toads, redbacks and mosquitos.
I kill all the spiders I find in my house, except the daddy long legs. They're so cute.

Hell, where are you? On a station in Queensland, Northern NSW?

Saw my first cane toad in Townsville about 10 years ago.  It was almost in the house. My hostess casually got a shovel and squished it. not sure when they are expected to reach  Adealaide.

I'm in Toowoomba but I grew up in Mackay.
To kill a cane toad with a shovel you need to dissect it.
These things get run over by cars and then hop away.
I would say they are one of the strongest animals on the planet.
I have a hatred for them having seen at least ten dogs die in convulsions and great pain from their poison.
And at certain times of the year there is one every half metre, everywhere.

As for redbacks, I have hundreds in my yard right now, but I've never met anyone who has been bitten by one.
There are very few mozzies and no sand flies here in Toowoomba....Yay!
But we get these mice plagues during droughts where if you put a bucket half filled with water out overnight, you will wake to a bucket full of drowned mice.
Everywhere has cockroaches, but we lived near a large lagoon and would get these swamp cockroaches that are twice the size with pincers, but at least they don't fly much.

Yup. All part of life's rich tapestry in Oz. How you off for rain?

Me; born in Adelaide. Lived for a couple of years as a townie in Kapunda. That began really well, when I fell down a quarry and broke myself.   Ages 8-10, I fucking hated it.

Two years army as a nasho; loved it; posted to Malaysia and  Singapore.

Have always love to travel, and have done a bit, within Oz and o/s.
