Looking for a summer holiday, everything is so expensive this year at least £100 more than I paid last year. Devon is looking like the favourite at the moment, I've seen a nice cottage by the coast with a pub in walking distance and it's free for the week I've taken off work.

Just need to double check my bank account, it's been an expensive month with one thing and another.

Went to my semi-monthly writer's meeting, and two things of note happened: During the meeting, I ordered a pulled chicken sandwich, and when it came time to pay for it, they extracted a 20% gratuity and, when they gave me the receipt back, they asked if I wanted to pay more. Given that A) 20% is already a pretty high tipping rate, B) I'm kind of a cheap bastard, and C) I found a bone in the chicken (once again, pulled, one would think whoever put it together would have noticed it), I decided not to. I suppose someone might chime in with that clip from Reservoir Dogs about tipping, but, bear in mind, they already extracted a larger-than average tip and asked for more.

However, something even bigger happened near me:



This happened exactly 24 hours from where I type this, and a few blocks away from me. The police don't know that much about what happened and information is limited at this point. At that point, I was out of town (at Des Plaines for my Business Ethics class), so I didn't witness it. Is it strange that my immediate response upon hearing my Dad talk about what little we know was more or less this?:



We drove past where the shooting happened (it was by our usual route back home from Edgewater), and we saw a bunch of people standing vigil outside the house with some Christmas lights surrounding the sidewalk. I saw NBC and Telemundo news trucks parked outside the gas station near the house.

Just watching some YouTube vids on how to build an outdoor pizza oven. Doesn't look too complicated, and I've got most of the stuff I'll need. Thinking about putting it by my bar in the corner.

Currently watching this week's entry in the Deep Hurting Project, and it's simply astonishing: I've seen several movies and read several stories where the protagonist is trying to commit suicide, but Gene, the protagonist in this kid's movie, may have the most depressing character motivation in the entire history of fiction, since he's a character with (supposedly) multi-faceted emotions, he has to sacrifice all except apathy. Maybe if he's lived a hard life and that there's safety in indifference, but that's not the case.
