What's everyone up to right now?
RE: What's everyone up to right now?
I posted this deal at AD, but I figured peeps here might want to know as well.

Dānu Wrote:Oh, I don't know if the deal is still good, but last night I was alerted by Slickdeals to a deal on a lifetime license to VPN services from FastestVPN for $10 for two devices, or $15 for up to five devices. That deal can be seen here. The reviews on this VPN provider are generally good, though they can't compete with some of the biggger names for number of servers. The speed is average and the feature set is good, the only big questions are how good their customer service is and how long they might be in business. Still, for ten or fifteen bucks, it's hard to go wrong.

Only thing I'd add that I didn't mention is that they aren't useful for cloaking where you're watching Netflix from, as Netflix susses them out typically, and they don't really try to evade detection by Netflix and say that officially they don't support such use. The only question to my mind is that this indicates that something about the VPN connection is detected by Netflix, just not necessarily anything that less rigorous or advanced detection methods are going to discover. I don't know much at all about such things. It would seem logical that high on Netflix's detection methods list would be maintaining lists of the active servers offered by each VPN. That doesn't explain why Netflix kept detecting a German author as connecting from Germany, so something is leaking, just not necessarily anything that anybody less aggressive would notice.

Running through some songs on the bass guitar, as my band have a gig tomorrow night.  I don't want to be the guy who plays a bum note lol

No work tomorrow, so I may well have a couple of beers and a crafty little spiced rum and coke. That is... coke of the oral, not nasal variety.  Just thought I'd clear that one up...  Smile

Ten months ago today, Dad and I went to work on an amplifier. Today, I finally got a chance to play through it. Since the cosmetics seem to be more or less fixed, here’s some pics of what it looks like.

Well, it sounds pretty good; it's plenty loud, and there was a bit of a learning curve. At this point, it sounds all right (though it might improve after we get that Jensen Mod 6-15 installed, since the impedances would actually be matched, unlike with this music.) The biggest problems (besides the AC-Tone being not as easy to control without the knobs) lies in the little tone-stack switch. The plan was that, on one setting, the bass and treble controls would work properly and on another, they wouldn't (because with the tone-stack on the AC-Tone, the two on the proper amp weren't necessary.) However, from fiddling with it, it looks like one setting turns off the tone stack and the other setting turns off the full amp. We will likely need to send it back to Minstrel, since, aside from the Line and Speaker outs, the tone-stack switch was the only part they could pull off. I'd post the Richie Cusack clip that's been littering my Deep Hurting Project posts, but then again, that requires a level of epic fail on a very basic level, like, say, a movie about Greek mythology with bugger-all of the actual Greek myths and a random Mesopotamian god in there, or having a trailer with more of a plot than the movie itself, or a movie whose plot is almost entirely consisted of holes. There could be a very good reason the tone stack switch didn't work as planned.

At Ravinia for the Classic Albums Live performance of Rumours.
  • Dad was worried about the weather, so he spring for pavilion seats instead of the usual lawn. Last I checked, the weather report was favorable, but the sky doesn’t look good.
  • I think I accidentally left my copy of One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich with my custom bookmark at home. Well, at least I got my copy of Nemesis and a paper clip to serve the same purpose.
  • Remember when I watched Catwoman for the Deep Hurting Project, And said I needed to try ordering “a White Russian, hold the Kahlua and vodka?” It turns out what you get is needlessly expensive milk.

Oh, and by the by, in commemoration of Miley Cyrus’ recent performance in Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too, this week’s entry in the Deep Hurting Project is LOL.

“Working vacation” at the beach is ongoing and doing well. We were hanging out on the upstairs watching the sunset earlier and were surprised to watch two sets of fireworks in the distance. My best guess is that both Havelock and Morehead City must have been celebrating the first day of summer.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh.
Where are we going and why am I in this hand basket?

Finally got the knobs for the preamp section of the Vaux amp:

So, the things to do now are:
  • Fix the tone stack switch.
  • Install that Jensen speaker.
  • Properly affix the brass bar separating the speaker grille from the front panel.
  • 3D print the Vaux Logo and stick it on the speaker grille cloth.

Also, it looks like I’ve figured out an oddity with the amp board: NightFire seems to have mislabeled the bass and treble knobs.

This might explain how the tone stack switch works the way it does.

Getting ready to go to the gym. My ILS worker will be here at noon, and I'll probably invite her in so that we can do some cooking this week. I've been so busy that I've just let things slide in my apartment. The trash needs removal, there are empty shopping bags and shipping boxes on the floor of the kitchen, the counter next to the sink is covered in what are primarily new acquisitions needing their first washing, and there are bags from multiple days containing groceries and purchases that have yet to be unpacked. I could devote some of our time to doing some of those things while she provides moral support, but that seems like a waste of the rather limited time each month that I have the use of her services.

Oh. And I'm going to a Twins game tomorrow night. Woot! Woot!
