In other news, I finally located the foxes that have been killing my chickens earlier tonight. Had to get one neighbors permission and borrow another neighbors dogs - but when I found them..I just couldn't do the deed. Called some buddies at wildlife to see if they might want to relocate. There aren't a whole lot of the little bastards left around here. I was a bit surprised with myself.

I've been participating in this fun little study on the composition and germination rates of (undigested and) commonly purchased scratch grain brands in free range poultry production. Spoiler alert, I now have many exotic and sometimes restricted bits of foliage growing on my property.

We're confident that all of it will be dead within two or three months, but as global average temperatures rise - that may no longer be the case for some cultivars seen to be profitable forage that were chosen for inclusion in mix precisely because of the expectation (and legal requirement) that they could not survive in the zones of their target markets.

It was, in short, a brilliant idea to feed chikens the seeds of invasive plants in markets where those seeds could not concievably survive....but, now, and with every passing year, those maps are outdated. It's unlikely that enforcement and regulation will meet or exceed the rate of change expected in regional climates. Kudzu may end up looking like a relatively benign mistake in the field.

(what threw all the undergrads parsing this data.....was the amount of unlisted species we've observed germinating from feed. The worst case...dodder. A motile parasitic vine that voluntarily targets the nightshade family. That's potatoes, tomatoes, tobacco, eggplant......but it'll fuck up pretty much anything if none of it's favorites are around - think morning glory that wants to kill us. It's been creeping out of regions that kliost it as a species of note for some time and we mostly assumed it was natural encroachment. Maybe there is that..but, apparently...it's also being transported on flatbed trucks. I'd been bitching about this for years. I found plants that shouldn't be with no acceptable explanation for how they got onto my property. Now I know. I was broadcast seeding them because they weren't listed as constuent parts of the feed - and for what it's worth the rates are so low that producers may not know..or may have plausible deniability. Doesn't really matter how low the rates are as only one or two of them ever needs to take hold to create a local population in the absence of predators. Good job! I wish I'd been keeping even better records..as, off the books and back of the envelope, I'd tell you that mystery weeds have cost me at least one years worth of proceeds if not more over seven years...which is break or make for a small farm. We already plan to lose that -for no specific reason-..so if we lose that for no specific reason and another year for some specific reason - rip. It costs 8grand upfront to grow and market an acre of tomatoes. Mull that shit around a bit.)
