RE: What's everyone up to right now?
November 10, 2021 at 12:43 am
I have been trying for years to get the adult kids and spouses to agree to drawing a name to buy for so that no one is stressing over the cost of Christmas. My plan had always been to focus on the kids. Daughter and almost daughter-in-law were talking tonight and DIL pitched the idea...apparently daughter was more receptive this year. We had mostly been passing gift cards around anyone so I'm happy for that.
Each family is getting a quilt from me. The grandkids' gifts are ordered and I will slip some cash into each jewelry box. Now all I have to do is find out whose name I get. We'll tend to that on Thanksgiving evening.

A quilt made by you? How special are they! I'm not taking the piss. In my family we were taught to treasure anything a person had made for us as gift. Sadly, none of my family have any any aptitude for anything like that.
I'd love to give my paintings away. So far I'm the only one who likes them. Except for one. A few years ago I painted a poster of Egypt for my Egyptian besotted sis. It's on her wall, so she either likes it or does so for my sake.

Making masks morphed into quilts. It's something I always wanted to try and since I had my sewing machine and other tools out of the closet where they had been collecting dust for about a decade it was a good time to start. I accidentally ordered two packages of the same fabric and needed to figure out what to do with it. So, there you go. In just over a year I have made nearly 30 quilts. Last year everyone got their own throw sized quilt. This year the adults (couples where applicable) will get a larger one.
Today I finished a Christmas quilt that I started last week. I don't really decorate for the holidays any more but thought the quilt would add some holiday color to the house if I drape it over the back of the couch. Surprising to me is that husband really likes it.
We won't discuss the eight small ones I have made for the dogs. Actually it's a good way to try out new ideas without committing to a full sized quilt and it helps keep fur and dirt off the furniture.

That's alot of quilts. We've got a bunch made out of the kids old clothes, just broke em out of the closet for winter. Everytime we do there's a few minutes of The Wife and I touching the cloth and ooing and aaahing and smiling at each other and remembering them in their onsies and bigfoot shirts and whatnot. My grandmother made most of them, says it helps with her arthritis - I'm always joking about putting her and all her quilting friends in a granny sweatshop when they lose their minds and can't object.

I have a hunch I will be getting the box full of my son's baseball shirts back from his days in Little League. That can be a project for after the holidays - his birthday is in April so it's doable.

Sweet story. I’ve still got the mittens my gran made from the first sheep I sheared all on my own. Some things are forever things.

You two-Boru and Nudger- reminded me of something. My great grandmother (who I was named after) made me a quilt when I was a preteen. It took a while to pry it out of mom's cold, greedy hands...she was afraid I would ruin it. After several moves with it safely in a bag to protect it I finally realized that's not what she made it for. So I started using it till it just wore out. I did save two big squares of it to one day make into a pillow or two and just the other day I was trying to figure out what to cover a couple pillow forms with...well, DUH. I need to get those quilt pieces out of the steamer trunk and find a backing material.

That's right, drive it like you stole it, because nothing makes it out of this world intact.

Gee I wish I had an interest in sewing, but I don't
Old clothes get chucked in the bin when I haven't used them for 2 years. Quilt covers somewhat longer. Commercial quilts get flick when they get too thin.
I use old T shirts for paint rags.
