Finished installing the new liquid cooler in my PC. There were a couple of scary minutes where I turned it on and nothing happened, but a quick survey reminded me that I had unplugged a cable and forgotten to plug it back in. I didn't break it! I don't know why I'm always amazed that I didn't break anything, but I usually am.

So, last Christmas, I got the Criterion Blu-Ray for Citizen Kane. Unfortunately, they had a weird mastering issue that starts about 30 minutes in. Two little screencaps to demonstrate the problem:




Yep, it suddenly starts to get washed out. The blacks and lighter greys have started to converge. And as someone who's familiar with the film, this isn't some kind of artistic choice Welles made, Criterion just dropped the ball for the Blu-Ray release. Bizarrely, the 4K version isn't affected. They even issued a recall, but part of their terms was that you had to destroy the disc. And, rather humourously, here's one dude who did so with a rock hammer he got from a 4K set of The Shawshank Redemption.




I could not bring myself to do so, so I just kept it. And now, I have a solution. Someone decided to sell a copy of the replacement disc (and only the replacement disc) on Ebay for less than $15 (including shipping and handling). I leapt at the chance and it should be on its way.

Also, speaking of Blu-Rays, the 4K Blu-Ray of Angel Heart came while I was in Wisconsin. And they did something really strange with the special features. Like I said before, they dropped something like half of the special features from the DVD version when the time came to port it to Blu-Ray. And while I was told that they'd all be brought back for the 4K release, they decided that, for reasons that I'm sure made sense somewhere, they'd just port the features that didn't make it onto the old Blu-Ray just onto the 4K disc, leaving the regular Blu-Ray disc more or less identical to the original release. And, no, they apparently didn't just recycle the original disc since they apparently added a single feature (a selected scene commentary with Mickey Rourke) to the Blu-Ray. Why the fuck bother including all those new special features you skipped the first time if you're just going to put them on the 4K disc and only the 4K disc? Hell, why remove those special features if they could all have just fit on the DVD? And it's not rights issues, because according to another website, it's been released on Blu-Ray in multiple markets with all the special features.

Reading that a package I was expecting today has been delayed by a train derailment. First thought was, "I hope my package is okay." Oh, of course, I'm sure the people are fine! Pffft.

I did have a boat sinking that cancelled an order that had been on the way.

My package was delivered this morning, despite tracking estimating a Monday delivery. I got to it before the package thieves did.



Thinking of going to the store. The first day without oppressive heat, and after the Mets game finishes, I'll have a couple of hours free.
