Trying to figure out what to say to my niece and her father. My niece has a three-year old nephew by her half-sister. The little guy got sick and his fever ran up to 105 degrees...he was taken to an emergency room in the Denver area yesterday and was given fluids and an antiemetic and sent home. So far what I know is he suffered a seizure likely due to the extreme fever and is on life support and has been declared brain dead. Many family members are currently on their way from Illinois to Denver to say their goodbyes.

I have dealt with several deaths from my late teens on but never of a child. I am grasping for words...even though they are worthless...I can't ignore this horrific situation. I can't imagine how they all must be feeling right now other than numb.

It appears he had contracted meningitis and the ER missed it.  They discharged him on Saturday and he died very early Sunday after suffering a massive seizure.  I still can't really grasp it.

Have the people that were around him been checked? I'd hate to see transmission cases.

I have found out a bit more, at least about why he was kept on life support. The little guy's going to be an organ and tissue donor. So far the family members traveling west to Denver are doing fine though my sister had a heck of time finding a room for my niece and her other sister and was only able to find one for tonight.
